Natural Images Landscaping

In this article Mr. Till writes "using HDR conservatively" can produce natural looking images. Do you agree?

Do you think his HDR landscapes look natural?

I agree with the other answers about the bad example thing. I've seen much more realistic looking images created from HDR.

The problem with the top image is the reflection of the skies blue in the shadow areas. If the editor of the image had adjusted the white balance of the underexposed frames they would have shown less blue and more of the actual colors of the areas in shadow. This sometimes needs to be done manually, masking in and out areas by hand. That shot would be time consuming.

The second image suffers from some over contrast and sharpening. The halos around the edges are just starting to peak. The problem with processing those images are that when you're looking at the image full sized it's not all that noticeable, but then your magazine editor throws it into an article reduced down to 1/10th of it's original size and any over sharpening gets exaggerated even more.

The images on the second and third pages do look better than what's on the first page.

One inherent problem with HDR is the lack of shadow or contrast. Without the shadows doing what they've always done then they look odd. Some people compensate with Tone Mapping, a localized contrast tool. Depending on the program and version of the program that you use it can render things looking rather texturized, yet it will still be a somewhat global texture which will negate any effect of depth that you were going for.

HDR has a lot of nuances to it. To do it well you need to practice, and the results aren't always apparent immediately. I think that's how some people get hung up. Digital has made some people impatient, myself included at times.
