Creeping phlox - are they dead?
Hi there and thanks for reading! I just purchased a home that has beautiful landscaping full of plants that I cannot identify. They are all mostly perennials I was told, but my main concern are the two plants located around the pond in the back yard. There are purple creeping phlox, well they were purple, but they have died. Is it correct that they only bloom for a short period? And if so, what do I do with them now? They are slightly green but brown towards the roots. I don't want them to die - i'd love to see them again in the spring, but I do not know how to care for them. The other plants in the pond are tall with what looks like orange flowers that are trying to bloom. I think they are also dying but if you have any idea of what type of flowers they are, please help! I'm a brown thumb trying to turn green! Thank you!
Creeping Phlox is really Phlox subulata which is known as an early Spring-flowering perennial that forms an evergreen, creeping, slow-growing, groundcover. It has a rather short blooming period, often same time as the tulips which like the same conditions and look wonderful coming up thru it. The rest of the year it looks boring and often shabby. Cutting back any foliage that is freeze damaged is a good idea, but leave all the leaves that look alive.
