When routine bites hard and ambitions are low...?
Though short-lived, Joy Division stand as one of the greatest bands ever, in my opinion. Both of their studio albums, Unknown Pleasures and Closer, are sonic perfection, as if whispered into Ian Curtis' ear by a higher power. Between July 1976, when the seeds of Joy Division were planted at a Sex Pistols concert in Manchester, and May 1980, when an ailing and devastated Curtis hanged himself (RIP), Joy Division changed the musical landscape and recorded and released songs which continue to resonate with fans and influence new bands (from Radiohead to Editors).

Joy Division are an incredible but tragic band. Every song is hard-hitting whether it be from the darkness of the music or the lyrics or both. They'd probably be just outside my top 10 favourite bands but if they had recorded more albums they'd definitely be a good bit higher on my list.
