Self-employed landscaper since 2002, wanting to return to IT or Sales . How do I explain in cover letter?
Here is my situation:
Bachelor of Science degrees in Management Information Systems (MIS) and Strategic Management. Since graduating from college in 1996, I have worked in both pharmaceutical sales and technical integration for an internet company. After being laid-off from a &^%#@. com in 2002, I decided I had enough on life in a cubicle.
I took my life in a 180 direction and started a landscaping company. Thanks to the explosive growth in the housing market, business was fantastic. Fast forward to 2008, , business has taken a nose dive. I've realized that the reason I went to college was so I could use my brain, not my body.
I've applied to several jobs and even tried to get on with some job placement firms. I've yet to have an interview. The job placement firms have told me that they cannot help me since I have been out of the industry for so long. I'm only 34..help!
Job Placement firms are nearly at the same level as used car salesmen. They want to make a quick and easy match and make quick money. Anything that requires effort or thinking out of the box is too much for them.
Have you stayed in touch with any of your previous co-workers or alumni from your major at college? If so, touch bases with them and let them know your situation. Their careers may have prospered over time and they may now be in a position to influence hiring decisions.
My other thought is that you should avoide job placement agenices and just respond directly to job postings at companies. You might find somebody that is sympathetic to your cause that has gone through career changes.
This is a far fetched idea...but would there be any industry value to combining your career experiences? Like build software for landscaping services?
You could also try finding some volunteer experiences for nonprofit agencies that might help pad your resume with some current IT projects. Non-profits also have connections with corporations so you might find somebody that can help you land your dream job that way, too.
Good luck,
