Include A Pond In Your Next Landscaping Project
For an instant focal point to your rear garden, think about building a pond. For example in Ontario those who own Ajax real estate are able to get a hold of Ontario Hydro for power and Enbridge for gas, but your area will have similar utilities. What better way to de-stress than sitting next to a pond and listening to water. However, before you begin digging, there are a number of things to remember to create the absolute backyard oasis.
The first step you should do is to contact your municipality to make sure that there are no gas or electric lines buried underneath the spot you have chosen for your pond. Mature trees will have major root systems so try to stay away from them. Select a location that will be visible from most of the garden for everyone’s enjoyment. For a more isolated retreat, tuck away your pond in a hidden area and landscape it profusely.
Mark the outline of your pond with a string. Shapes are limited when choosing a pre-formed pond. When working with a liner you can let your imagination run wild. When you begin digging, remember the plateau for the plant terrace which will be about eight inches down and one foot wide for liners or determined by the size of your pre-formed pond. You should now make sure that your pond’s edges are level. Unless you have a power source near the pond, don’t forget to dig a shallow trench to bury the PVC pipe that will house the electric cord.
Line the base of the water feature with one inch of sand. Also pour sand on the terraced steps. If working with a pre-formed pond, lower it in the pit. If working with a liner, commence laying it down. Trim four feet longer and wider than the actual water feature will aid. Push the liner down and smooth out any folds.
Now is a great time to fill the pond. As the pond fills, backfill the extra space around your pre-formed pond and try to time it so that you are finished at about the same time the pond is filled. In the option of a liner, keep in mind to keep pulling the liner taunt. Install your pump at the bottom of the pond and bury the cord.
Now comes the fun portion - decorating up your pond. Begin by laying down flat rocks around your pond and stagger a second layer for a realistic look. Let the rocks overhang a bit over the water. Hide your water pump wire in between rocks and add a third rock on top being careful not to compress the hose.
Take your time when devising how you will landscape around your pond. Determine if you want your pond to be easily seen or should it harmonize with the rest of your garden? To keep your pond accessible, ensure you keep at least once side clear. Designing a feature on one side and one end while leaving the rest of the pond bare is a popular landscaping method. Also remember to select plants that will do well in a wet environment. In and around an Ajax homes in Ontario will often experience differences in temperature with cold winters and hot, humid summers so take your region’s climate into account.
You may now sit back and appreciate the fruits of your labor. In most cases, ponds can be one weekend projects. Take the dive. Include one to your backyard and be ready to receive lots of compliments.
