What are my chances of being hired at GameStop?
I turned in an application to my local GameStop today, and I just wanted to know what the chances of getting hired were. Obviously it's going to be tough to get a job anywhere in this economy, but the reason I'm asking is because I have professional experience as a video game journalist (which I put on the application) as well as being a lifelong gamer, and I want to know if that will increase the chances of me getting a position at the store. I mean, would that place me above some guy who comes in and just says he plays video games a lot, or would we be about the same in terms of getting the job?
The reason I'm asking is because I've never had a job in retail before. All of my previous jobs were manual labor like landscaping, so I have no idea what to expect from this employment process.
Hi There,
I used to work fro Gamestation as a Store Manager and then progressed to a dual role of muli site support manager and regional recruiter so I have handled a huge amount of retail applications. I now own my own business Video Games CV which specialises in resourcing experienced video games individuals for developers & publishers Worldwide, so I now work on the other side! Part of what I do is advice people on their CV's/Resumes so I feel that I am well qualified to answer this question!
As long as they have vacancies then I think you have a good chance as you said you had explained in your application that you are a life long gamer and a games journalist and this kind of info is so very important in the games industry as it is a unique industry which ever side of the fence you work on and a passion for games is an absolute must!!! Of course there will be customer service face to face interaction so personal presentation is also important as well as the ability to communicate. Hopefully you will get called in for an interview so that you can show off these skills.
To help your application my advice would be to drop in to the store in a few days time making sure you are presentable and no, you don't need to do the whole suited and booted thing, but just a smart pair of jeans, clean trainers and a nice shirt and see if the manager is around. If you didn't hand your application in to the manager in person then you have agreat excuse to talk to him/her and check that they received it, if you did hand it in directly to the manager just check to see what the progression is. Doing this will give you the opportunity to interact in person and show that even though you have no direct customer service experience you can actually talk!!!!
Good luck!!!
