How do I make a clean edged landscaping area?
I need detailed instructions from someone on how to take my weed/grass lawn and dig up a few areas so that I don't have to trim for an hour around every tree/bush/birdbath etc. I have looked at many things others have done in their yards, but I just don't get it. Once you dig up all the grass and have the edges the shape you want, then what? Do you have to cover it with landscaping fabric? and then rock or bark? Can I leave the edge without and edging product like that plastic stuff and still not have the grass spread into the bed? And what if weeds start poking up? Basically I would like really nice curvy edges and be able to mow right over the edge to get all the grass but not chew up the bark/rocks. I want to do this under where my wrought iron fence is also. Right now there are TALL weeds and grasses growing up everywhere the lawnmower can't get in and I don't want to weed trim for an hour. THANK YOU!

It's a battle at best to control creeping grass and weeds from entering a given area.
Weed seeds are carried by the wind and land and germinate at will, even with weed block in place, Yesterday I weeded my son's front yard, the area had weed block and covered with loads of pebbles as a mulch ,. and even with all that I spent 2 to 3 hours weeding. ugh
OK, so try using rubber tree rings, Remove the Sod, place an extra weed block then the rings you can mow over rings , this will help to control better. There is also an Edger made of the rubber stuff, all available at Lowe's & Home Depot. some is 6" wide and some is 12" wide, and each section is 6' in length, Cut away the sod and place it down, again, you can mow over it. As for the trees and edging, once you cut the sod, you can keep a bottle of roundup handy to knock out stray weeds as they appear. or if you think you did not get all the roots of the weed out when you cut away the sod, spray it on the soil first before laying down the rubber products.
