Can you recommend how to landscape on top of a root system?
I have two dirt areas between my front porch and the driveway on each side of the sidewalk. They are about 6' x 25' in dimension. Within both areas there are medium to large trees, about 20-30 feet high. Grass won't grow in these areas, so I'd like to put up some kind of border and then fill in with 3-4 inches of mulch and some plants.
My problem is on each side of the sidewalk, there are some exposed roots that run along the edge of the dirt area by the driveway. The run parallel to where I'd like to put my edging. They are approximately 3-6 feet long and stick out of the ground about 3-6 inches. I've considered rock borders, plastic and wood borders and so far haven't figured out a solution.
I'd love any recommendations. I know I cannot damage or bury the roots. I just want to build over them somehow to create a good border so i can fill it with some nice mulch and plants.

apply your mulch use the roots themselves as the border retaining the mulch ..any where else that the roots are not exposed use wooden retainer to carry through between open spots.
birds love to scatter mulch every where so if could plant something along the edges including the exposed roots would break up the look and should work ..
