How to mask off section of furniture for painting?
Picture the front of an armoire. There is an elaborate, curvy border all around, about 10 inches in. I want to keep the area outside the border as it is, and paint a landscape on the inside. So I want to mask off the outter area. I tried using painters tape, but the design is too curvy to do this. Any ideas?
It would help to be able to see the curvature in question. But almost anything can be masked off with enough care and patience. Bear in mind that the tape doesn't actually have to lie flat, it just has to provide a seal at the desired edge, and a barrier over any parts in danger of getting painted inadvertently. Since you are planning a landscape, you'll probably be painting in a controlled fashion, rather than spraying, rolling or slopping, so you can do this:
Apply the tape perpendicular to the surface to be painted. When a tape is standing on its edge, it can follow any kind of curve. Use the back of a fingernail or a burnishing tool (my preference) to make sure there's a good seal at the crucial edge. With the tape sealed down for about 5 mm you have enough edge protection to get on with your painting. If you really want all the bodrer covered up, you can put some paper or cloth over it AFTER the edge is taped off.
If you have more daunting curves, you can cut darts and gores (little v-shaped sections) in the parts where there might need to be a change in direction that can't be accommodated by letting the tape follow it. Use a scalpel (Xacto)-type blade after the tape is already stuck at the edge it needs to be.
Once the masking is complete, a line of matte medium along the seal will add the ultimate leak-proofing.
