Shade tree advice and suggestions for my yard!?
The backside of my house gets direct sunlight on my living room and I'd like to put in a nice fast growing shade tree next to the living room to help block some of the sun on that side of the house. Here are the basics on the area I want to put the tree:
1. I live in Yuba City (greater Sacramento area but plant sites say I'm in zone 7b?)
2. The area gets direct light the entire day, and this side of the yard has rock installed with no sprinkler systems to worry about uprooting.
3. There is only about 10ft between my patio (cement) and the fence.
4. I would really prefer something that is low-mess but can handle a little seasonal cleanup.
I'm very hopeless with landscaping and such, so you have to give me a little more information than "plant this kind of tree"!
Thanks!
Fast growing may mean that it provides you with shade quickly but it also tends to mean it'll keep on getting bigger and bigger quite quickly and need to be regularly coppiced or crown thinned by people you have to pay unless you are happy with a tree that makes your house darker and darker.
You are going to want something that won't produce dense shade, otherwise it'll just cut out all the light, drops its leaves for winter so you get more light then and doesn't fruit heavily.
I don't know how tall you want it of course but I'm going to suggest Birches, Sliver or Himalayan, for their decorative bark and dappled shade. Japanese Maple maybe but that's probably a bit slow growing for you. Honey or Black Locust but they can be fairly big trees, even one of the smaller Ashes, like the Japanese Big-Leaved, but again probably far bigger than you want.
Of course the other option would be something that can be cut back each year but produces an abundance of shoots, like the Foxglove tree which can send out 3m shoots.
