How to upkeep small acreage? (Landscaping, Mowing)?
My husband and I are city folk. We recently moved to an area, and are looking for rental properties. I found one I fell in love with, but it comes with "small acreage"...the hubby says he is not about to get on a riding mower every weekend after working so hard all week..is that what folks normally do? Or hire a company? Buy a goat? LOL, but seriously, any suggestions would be appreciated.
I just checked, and it's 7 acres total...
Ok, what's small acreage? 1, 5, 10, 20, ...ac?
How much time & money do you have?
I can appreciate hubby not wanting to spend his weekend mowing. Got a buddy, that after his divorce, he bought a condo.
What restrictions come with the rental agreement? Have the owner maintain it. Lawn tractor, compact tractor with finish mower or brush hog. Have someone hay it once or twice a year. Hire a local to mow it. Is it fenced? Plow it up & grow corn, wheat, wild flowers,... turn it into a forest,...Rent the land to a farmer. Lease it to hunters.
How is it maintained now?
Myself, I'm at a stage in life, that I enjoy my 36+ acres. I'm not going to have the place looking like a golf course...it's a farm! I mow paths with a tractor/brush hog & use a lawn tractor for smaller areas (around the house & gardens). The wife likes to tool around on the lawn tractor too & takes it down to the pond to fish. The remainder I have hayed by a local farmer...he gets 1/2 & buys my 1/2...big bales are going for $30. The going hunting lease rate is $10 ac in this area (I allow a friend to hunt for free...I get as much deer meat that I want).
