Backyard Landscaping Basics

I am stupid when it comes to engines. I own my own landscaping company and need to learn at least the basics.?

Any good books to help get around lawnmower engines. Like with troubleshooting ideas and all? I will leave my ZTR's to the mechanics but I keep two residential 21" around for trimming and backyards my other mowers cant get into. I can do the basics like change oil, change spark plug and the air filter after that I know nothing. Now I know I cant change overnight but learn perhaps a little more. Thanks all in advance. God Bless and Peace out..........

I'm a certified small engine mechanic.
1 option is to go through a correspondance training course. Foley-Belsaw in Kansas City offers one.
Another option is to buy a service manual generic to your mower's engine manufacturer. Briggs & Stratton engines are very simple to maintain but poor for rebuilding due to the short expected lifecycle when compared to a Honda, Kohler, Shindaiwa or Stihl.
For the most part, with a residential mower, keeping the oil fresh, spark plug and filters clean, blades sharp and any belts (for power assist) clear, you shouldn't need to do much maintenance.
The most common problems beyond what I've already mentioned that I see are dirty carburetors, and poorly gapped ignition modules. Both are easy to fix. Carburetors usually just need to be sprayed off, taken off the mower, swirl some gasoline in the tank and remove any residue. If the carb is heavily coated, some more care is needed to clean it.
Ensure that the flywheel is clean of debris, metal shavings, etc before attempting a regap. .Regapping the ignition module requires more tools and finesse. You should only need to do this if you are having problems with your spark. To check this, get a spark tester. They're fairly cheap and can save you a lot of work. If the spark doesn't fly, remove the shroud, and you will see an ignition module bolted to the engine and facing the flywheel. You use a feeler gauge set to the gap required, loosen the bolts for the module and slide the feeler between the flywheel and module. You want the feeler to able to come out of the gap but with some resistance once the bolts are tightened. Test your spark. If the spark is still bad, change the plug. If it's still bad after that, you probably have a bad module.
